SQLServer7 Security...

Transferred a VB6 program to a new computer. Installed SQLServer7 as before and thought I made all the settings the same (project was running with default security (sa?)...but now the application won't run...says the connection is not accessible. Not sure how to check where the problem might be? The server is running...may be a security thing?? Any help greatly appreciated!

You'll need to get the exact error message that the app is getting back from the SQL Server when it's trying to login.

Can you log into the database with Enterprise Manager?

I can log in with enterprise manager. The message text in VB is "Error 3251 )Object or provider is not capable of performing requested operation) at line 0 in procedure ... of module ...". Wondering if installing under a different user name than was on the other PC would do this? Thanks!

Do you have all the correct ODBC drivers (MDAC). If so, make sure that you have the same version of MDAC you had on the other computer. Also, make sure that it was not a DSN connection!

thanks rocco...yeah, all that stuff appears to be the same. Not sure what you mean by DSN connection. The database connection is opened with ADODB.connection, provider, mode, open , "sa", database name...etc.

Perhpas the sa password is not the same on both servers. BTW it is a very poor practice to connect using sa anyway. YOu are giving the users the reights to do anything to the database. Very, very bad practice.

SQLSister is correct about bad practice...but this is an in-house application where everybody is "on the same level" so no problems there.
