I am installing SQL server onto my laptop running XP as I want to create some test databases and learn SQL.

Am I correct in understanding that I must use Enterprise manager and run the register SQL server wizard? When I go to add the server there is no (local) to choose from the list. I'm obviously going wrong somewhere and I would appreciate any help at all. Any pointers would be great, all I want to do is get started with some test databases.

Thanks

did you install a default instance or a named instance??

I installed the server edition rather than the personal edition. Got it working now.

thanks
