The key it self isn't storred. It's converted from the key into the product id which can be found in the registry.
Having the actuall key isn't that important. If you are audited just make sure that you have enough licenses to cover all the machines. That's what matters.
Are you being asked for the key with an install of Reporting Services?
If so, the reason is because Reporting Services has been installed on a server without SQL Server installed on it. Reporting Services requires a license when installed on a box without SQL Server. If you install it on a box with SQL Server, then it won't ask you for your SQL Server key.

Thanks you all for responses, we have enough number of licenses to go around all the servers. This particular server was installed someone prior to my arrival to the company. During the initial install they might have used the wrong key, so I want to correct that now. So if you can direct me to the correct registry so I can make the updates.
Also I am not sure is this error related to OS. If you can tell me which resgistry I can find the OS key would be great.
This isn't a SQL Server error. This is an operating system problem. You need to check with the Windows Groups and find out where the Registration key is listed for the OS.
Or, you can call Microsoft's help line and get them to assist you in correctly registering your operating system.
