What's the difference between the SQL Server Agent service, and the SQL Server service?

Is one better than the other?

Thanks,

Jenny

The SQL Server service is the actual SQL Server itself. This has to be running to be able to do anything with the server itself.

SQL Server Agent mainly takes care of scheduled tasks but has other functions, eg automatically restart the main SQL service if it stops unexpectedly.

BOL contains full information on both of these, plus the other services that SQL Server can use.

Thanks James. That makes sense.

This may sound like an odd question, but what is BOL?
