SQL Server 2005 vs. SQL Server 2000

Hi

Our company has just been informed that we can not buy SQL Server 2000 licenses any more and will have to buy SQL Server 2005 instead.

The issue is that our applications have not been tested with SQL Server 2005 and we do not want to ship our application with this version until we have tested it completely.

Moreover, our clients aren't too keen on us installing SQL Server 2005 until we have finished our verification.

Does anyone out there know of a way whereby we can either keep on buying SQL Server 2000 licenses or buy SQL Server 2005 license but still install SQL Server 2000 on our clients' machines?

Note: In SQL Server 2005, CALs are offered in two types:
• SQL CAL. Any SQL CAL (32 bit, 64 bit, and IA64) can be used with any licensed server running SQL Server regardless of the platform (32 bit, 64 bit, and IA64),
• Workgroup CAL. Workgroup CAL can be used only with a licensed SQL Server Workgroup Edition server.

I understand this to mean that you can use your SQL 2005 CALS with your SQL 2000 server, or vica versa for that matter.

That's how I read it too. However, K., you'll want to be careful that you aren't trying to use the same license simultaneously for 2k5 & 2000. You'll get nailed big time if MS finds out.

You can use SQL 2005 Cals to connect to SQL 2000, however you can NOT use SQL 2000 cals to connect to SQL 2005.

Sorry, I should have it more clear. I am not talking about CAL's at all.

I am talking about the SQL Server itself. We install MSDE 2000 on all our client machines by default and standard version on machine which need bigger than 2 GB databases (some usually go upto 100's of GBs)

I have been informed that we can not ship SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition anymore because they are not available in the market anymore and instead will have to buy a WorkGroup or Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005 instead. Since, we have not tested our application with this new version of the SQL server, we and our clients do not want to take the risk.

Not a problem. Same goes for the server. You can purchase the SQL 2005 license and install SQL 2000 via your downgrade rights (you have to provide the media however).

Check with insite or cdw. I beleive that they will still ship SQL 2000.
