Hello,
I have a SQL server 6.5 database that I need to upgrade. The old tech has uninstalled and stolen the software. I am unable to buy SQL 6.5, but have 7.0. I need to upgrade our database without 6.5. When I try this, it asks for the existing server... which I don't have...

Is there a way around this?

I haven't done this before but I think you can restore your 6.5 backup if you have any to a 7 server. Read sp_dbcmptlevel to set the compatibility level.

I have the SQL 7 on windows 2000 server on one domain and SQL 6.5 on windows NT 4 on another domain; they are not seeing each other. what now??)

You cannot restore a SQL 6.5 backup to SQL 7. You must upgrade or use DTS to import from SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.

Do the two domains have a trust relationship? Can you link the SQL 6.5 Server into SQL 7 using the IP address of the 6.5 server?

Check this link. Although focused on SQL 2000, much is applicable in SQL 7.
