I am not a database administrator. I do not study the vagaries of of SQL2K setup, care, or maintenance.

We are upgrading a SQL7.x installation to 2K.

Our current install of 7.x includes the SQL applications on the C:\ drive, but the actual database files, mdf, ldf, etc on the E:\ drive. The server itself is dual-processor, 2Ghz, with a couple pretty massive drives, but no RAID setup.

Is that good? Is it a problem? I'm being told that the upgrade will be more difficult in this situation, and that it would be simpler to store both the SQL2K application and the databases on a single drive.

Is there a "preferred" method of setup for a database server with two (or more) distinct drives?

I don't have immediate answers to these questions. Do you?

Thank you in advance for any time spent assisting my pinheadedness.

I look at the C: drive as for the OS ONLY and try not to install much more than the OS there.

I've also read that performance is enhanced by putting the db's on a different drive than SQL Server itself. This is what I do. Also, we keep back ups on a different drive than where SQL lives.

Putting the mdf and ldf files on separate drives gives optimum performance. I dont think where the software goes makes much difference

Also lots of memory is of benefit and try not to run other apps on the server.

Having the SQL binarys installed on c is fine. That's where I put them. The mdf and ldf files should be seperate from the OS on C, and in a perfect world should be on 2 different drives. mdf on one and ldf on another. All drives should be RAIDed. OS should be RAID 1, ldf should be RAID 1, and mdf should be RAID 5.

If you'd like me to go into more detail let me know.
