My company runs spilt DNS, so we have 2 different IP addressed for our mail server; one when you are outside our company and one on the inside. The problem is when people take laptops home and connect their VPN, email times out because it cannot find the mail server. Well i looked into the problem and found that when a user is connected to an outside network, email works fine. The email server is resolved as an outside address, but when they start their VPN, the email server still trys to resolve as an outside address. Everything works properly when I use a computer that has never connected to the companys network. In other words, when my home computer accesses my email account from an outside network or when i dial in with my VPN, everything works and resolves as it should.
Any ideas out there???? [cannon][PC3]

Does email work if you run an ipconfig /flushdns?

Perhaps you need to not allow your vpn to be your gateway when connected. In the Properties for your VPN connection, Go to the Networking tab and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Check the Properties of TCP/IP, Go to Advanced and take out the Tick which says "Use default gateway on remote network".

This may solve your issues.

Email still does not work when flushing the computers DNS entries.

I will try to remove the entry for the remote gateway setting this weekend and see what happens!
