I have one DHCP server which we want to move to new hardware, but want to have split scopes over 2 servers. Setting split scopes is easy enough, but what about the existing server and DHCP database? Anyone shine some light on possible ways to go about this?

mojo31,

Don't know much about it, but you should be able to do a DHCP force renew. The DHCP server can send a unicast FORCERENEW message, as far as I've read somewhere.

When you swap DHCP server, the clients will still run on their leases, but maybe you can invoke the force renew to build a new lease DB on the new server?!

Let's hear how it turns out §;O)

Yeah its easy enough, via SMS, send out a ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew script to invoke clients to pick up new leases, but will they go to the new server? Thats the key.

mojo31,

If you disconnect the old DHCP server and then connect the new one then send out a renew msg => leases can then only be obtained from the new DHCP, hence logged there, right?!

It's not my area of expertice, so forgive me if I'm missing some essentials §;O)

mojo31, Just thought of this: If all teh PC on your LAN are desktops, then compare the number of leases on the DHCP -old vs. new -this should give you an idea...

Good Luck §;O)
