Hi all,
This is very strange. Have never encountered before. I am working in a Word document, and for many pages, there is no problem, with spell check. Then, it hits a point, and it stops checking the words. I copied even 1 sentence from that area where it's no longer checking, and pasted into a blank document. Still, it doesn't check the words that are wrong. If I CTRL+Enter, start a new page and start typing then, the same sentence, it shows the words misspelled. I thought it might have something to do with language, but I can find no setting other than English US anywhere. (And usually it would mark everything wrong when I've encountered "language" issue before where for some reason it shifts into French). A "forced" spell check skips this area all together. Any suggestions? It's driving me crazy, and I have a document due tomorrow! :)

Best Regards,
Scott

Strangely, changing the style fixed this issue, but I'm not clear why still Word decided that the current applied style was to be "skipped" for spelling and grammar.
If anyone knows of the root cause, would appreciate it.

Scott,

I was intrigued by your issue and was able to find this part of a discussion on spell checking in Word 2007. Perhaps your issue is related to this process as well. It would certainly explain why changing the style "fixed" the problem.

If you want to turn off spell checking for a specific paragraph, you can do so by making sure there is no language associated with the paragraph.

For Word 2007, the steps are:
1. Select the paragraph for which you want spell checking turned off.
2. Display the Review tab of the ribbon.
3. In the Proofing group, click on Set Language. Word displays the Language dialog box.
4. Make sure the Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar check box is selected.
5. Click on OK.

At this point Word will not check the spelling or grammar of the paragraph. It will, however, check any other paragraph in your document for which proofing is not turned off. If you find yourself changing the language setting for many paragraphs in your document, you may be best to use styles to define a specific style that has proofing turned off. You can then apply that style wherever necessary in your document.

Lyle,
Very interesting. I have a saved version from earlier that has the problem. (Kept for testing later). I'll give that a try and see if it resolves the issue.
Cheers!

One more thing:

have you possibly set that style to "automatically update"?
If so, the "no proof" property might have been applied to the style while you were marking a small selected portion of text in that style as "no proof".
