We have a Dell Optiplex 280 with a 3.2 Ghz processor, 2GB RAM, small form factor, onboard video/sound, 7200rpm 80GB drive and is operating on our network. The user does mostly data processing/entry into our accounting software and he crunches number a lot in Excel. He is still complaining of there being slowness with his computer when he tries to crunch stuff. What would be the bottleneck on this computer? Is it more likely network issues? The files he is using are off the server. Any ideas?

check to see the CPU usage when he is working.
it can be that another application is working in the background and make the CPU busy.

Well if the files are on a remote server, check the type of connection he is using to access the particular server. What is important is the speed of his connection to the server and the speed of the server, as that will have its incidence. His pc power is only half the equation, you have to check the server part of it too.

Big thing to test is whether it's affecting other workstations nearby. Perhaps it's only happening at peak usage times of the day?
