Speakers clicking every 60 seconds

I have a W2K machine that I have my speakers hooked to and they work fine. But if I am not using them (nothing is running that accesses them), I get these clicks that come out of them about once a minute. I can't figure out why. It will do this all day.

Anyone know what could cause this?

We had a Win98 PC do that also. We found that if you placed a CD in the CD drive it would stop. This might not be your problem but it is worth a try.

Also if they are cheap speakers, and/or not shielded that well, I have found Cell Phones communicating with the Tower make clicking sounds in speakers. You can especially hear it when the cell phone is receiving a phone call.

I believe the click, which happens every sixty seconds is telling you that your machine has refreshed the browser or the screen or some process. Go into your Control Panel>Sounds and Multimedia and examine any of the processes that use the Click sound. I'll bet it's one of them. Remove the sound from the process and your machine should cease clicking.

I do have a lot of sounds there.

Is there a way to listen to the sound to figure out which is the one making the clicking sound? I tried to double click on the different sounds from the sound tab and I don't get anything.

Tom,
If my suggestion here insults your knowledge, please forgive me.

Go back into your Control Panel>Sounds & Multimedia>Sounds tab and select one of the functions that has little speaker on the left side. Click the solid-black arrow to the right of the sound description (ie Utopia Asterisk.wav or Click.wav). The arrow will activate the sound selected for that specific function (ie Asterisk,Critical Stop,Exit Windows, etc). You should hear this sound thru your speakers (as long as they're energized). Scroll thru the Sound Events and note wherever Click is used. You may have to use the one-at-a-time method of diagnosing when the sound is used but you should be able to figure it out from here.

Now, if the sound isn't activated by the solid-black arrow, there could be another issue involved. At that point, report back to this forum and we'll see if we can help you figure it out from there.
