Look up spam assasin or surf control. I've used both to guard smtp gateways with reasonable success. There seem to be a lot of packages for specific E-mail systems, Exchange, Notes, GroupWise etc. so you might also check with one of the Forums on this site dedicated to that E-mail system. I frequent the GroupWise forum and there is a lot of good user input on spam issues as well as anti-virus.
