I read several posts, and have tried each differnt solution in turn. Here's my delima, When I change the settings on the routing tab, then &quot;routing restrictions&quot;, and check the box &quot;Hosts and clients with these IP address&quot; and do not define any IP address, after restarting, it stops relaying, but if I send an email outside of the users on the exchange server I get &quot;550 Relay not allowed&quot; (or similar). I'm trying to prevent someone using the server for spam, but not limit the users on the server from sending emails outside of the domain.(I host many sites and offer email hosting for those sites through this server). In a nut shell, I want everyone on the server to be able to send there emails and recieve their emails, but I don't want someone being able to send spam through the unprotected server.<br>Thanks ahead of time, Dale

In your case, the users need to authenticate the server to be able to send mail. To do this, they have to check the box in the tools/accounts/properties (of the spcecific account)/servers/my server requires authentication checkbox, and if different than the incoming mail server enter the username and the password in the settings, logon using -username/password. Good Luck

I figured that out yesterday, and updated the server and told everyone to check that checkbox, I only have on person who says they having problems.

Thank you for your reply.

More feedback, (I spoke to soon) I had several users having problems, I ended up unchecking the box on the server (hopefully, temporaily) I was having trouble authenticating some users???? I don't understand why, I'm still researching the issue.

Here's one common cause for the problem you are describing:

If you are having trouble authenticating users, and the users are using POP3 to connect and not MAPI (Outlook) a likely culprit would be that the user name and the mailbox name are not the same. If the smtp address is &quot;Dale.Carnegie@delima.net&quot; and the domain user name is &quot;dalec&quot; you would have problems. Again, this would only be a problem if your clients were connecting via POP3.

Thanks for your help, but, I think all of them are using outlook or outlook express and I did make sure of this. This relaying issue sure is a big pain. Seems like you get grief if you don't do it or if you do the users want to kill you.

They may be using Outlook or Outlook Express, but are they configured to use &quot;Internet Mail&quot; or are they specifically set up in &quot;Corporate Workgroup&quot; mode which would allow them to access the Exchange Server via MAPI? I don't think Outlook Express even supports MAPI, which makes me think you may be running in POP3 mode.

Outlook Express Does NOT support MAPI. Thus the configuration of a new mail account only asking for POP server name and SMTP server name. You might find some relief by contacting a local internet/email provider. Sometimes they share general configuration information with &quot;partners&quot;, in an effort to assist with blocking SPAM. If they block it, then it would be beneficial to help you block it.
