hello
Does anyone know how much space an empty dir uses up on the HD?
I have an app that creates them and after a while i can see several thousand of them on my HD. The vendor tells me not to touch them - i beg to differ
i think they are useless. anyhow, i'd be interested to know how much space they use and how they affect seek performance of the NTFS file structure

Probably no space at all - I just checked the space remaining on my HD, created an empty folder then checked again and there was no change.

However there will probably be an entry for each file & folder in the Master File Table. These entries take up 2k each. I don't know much about how the MFT works but I think it's a fixed size in a hidden area of the disk; I suspect there's room for zillions of 2k records but I suppose you might run into problems if you end up with squillions of empty folders.

If you only have thousands then they won't cause problems and won't affect seek times. You can read more (extremely technical) info about NTFS here.
