Yes. There is no credible statement as to the release date for Service Pack 2.

Remember that any date has several other dates as well:

RTM: Release to Manufacturing (This indicates a "final" release of code)
RTW: The "final" makes the Windows Update site. Usually 7-10 days after the RTM

Approximately three weeks after the RTM, expect to see this update included on CD inside or on the cover of most computer magazines on earth, and web resources to order the CD to be sent to you.

I would be pleaed as anyone if it shipped August 2, 4, or 5 2004. The only ship date I will bet on: You will have it before Christmas, 2004.

If you have any money on this as a bet, perhaps the following from the Microsoft SP2 site will help:

. 8/2/2004 Microsoft pulled all its download sites for SP2.
. Very, very late (or very, very early 8/4/2004): the following appeared:

• Aug 2, 2004: Windows XP SP 2 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) Removed from the Web

This signifies the end of the pre-release distribution program in anticipation of the final release of SP2. Windows XP SP2 remains on schedule for release this month.

We recommend that you not install the RC2 version of SP2 on additional computers. Instead, install the final, improved version of Windows XP SP2 when it becomes available. Check this site frequently for updates.
