Q1.I don't really know if SP1 is installed - how can I confirm?
Q2.How can I stop the update continually appearing as an available update? Or how can I successfully install it?
Q3.Any suggestions re the two updates that fail to install?

KB93633 (SP1) keeps appearing when I check for updates manually. However when I check Update History it shows that this has successfully installed 6 times. I select the update, install it (including license agreement tick). I am not prompted to re-start the PC but do so anyway.
I run Windows Update select “Installed Updates” and see a list of successful and unsuccessful updates. I think this list may only go back to the date I first installed SP1.
I select “Check for updates”. When completed I re-check “Installed Updates” and find “No updates have been installed on this computer”. Three updates are shown as available INCLUDING KB93633 (SP1).

The other two updates shown repeatedly fail to install – both giving error 80070490 (which I cannot find a reference to). These updates are KB905866 (Junk email, referred to below) and KB946041 (a Vista reliability update). As SP1 includes previous updates are these two needed anyway?
Update: I tried once more to install KB946041 on its own. It failed displaying 8024AFF but in Update history only the error message 80070490 appears.

I have been using Vista since early last Summer. Set to automatically install updates. One update KB905866 – Junk email seemed to give me stability issues (or maybe I was warned about it?). As I was not using the computer for emails I chose to hide this one. Appx 2 weeks ago I decided to unhide this update as I now plan to use the pc for emails. Subsequently I did have some stability / startup issues so I uninstalled that update but did not hide it as it was not clear it was the culprit (A few BSODs referring to memory though I have not yet detected a fault).

Despite settings to update automatically each morning SP1 does not appear to have been attempted other than when I have gone in manually.

In case it is relevant: Update history only goes back to 19 March. SP1 is shown as succesful on 21 March.

Thanks,

Gavin

Vista SP1 will be a traditional service pack, collecting previously-issued updates into a single installation, and including few new end user features".

What Stop Errors are you seeing? Have you tried disabling any antivirus software prior to the installation of updates?

This is the "classic" fix for all strange Windows Update problems.

Temporarily stop the automatic updates service.
Rename C:\windows\software distribution to C:\windows\software distribution-old
Rename C:\windows\windowsupdate.log to c:\windows\windowsupdate-old.log
restart the automatic updates service.

Thanks. I have version 6.0 Build 6000. No reference to SP1 so I guess the answer is that it has NOT installed correctly.

I also found many other events. Several related to Spooler , shutdown and disk errors. Fascinating if difficult to comprehend. Once I have finished work I will try installing again, note the date and time so I can view events related to that install. One of the messages starts

Not sure what to make of that. Should I do update from Safe Mode?

That is just a warning message that can be ignored (usually). In XP it was corrected by installing a Microsoft program called "UPHClean", this program is not compatible with Vista and if you upgraded from XP to Vista the program should be uninstalled first.

It may be a good idea to use the Memory Diagnostic to check your RAM or a third party tool.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

As to a Safe Mode install, you would need the SP1 download to do that.

Microsoft Vista SP1 install problems …

See how you go after a clean install.

Thanks both. I'll work on these things (probably over the weekend) and let you know what worked / award stars.

I have run the in-built memory test several times with no errors found but will try the others. Wonder if I need to tweak the voltage or something. I'll start another thread in Hardware forum if I actually manage to detect any memory issues and need further help to resolve.

(In May 07 installed VISTA Home Premium from an OEM disk onto my home-built system. Gigabyte 965P-DS3P, E6320 Core2Duo, Crucial Ballistic 2Gb DDR2 667Mhz, Jeantech JNP-500AP 500w power supply. Never got around to learning about overclocking - fast enough without at the moment but one day ...)

Clean Install? You mean download the huge file, reformat my disk etc? This PC has only been used for Office and a few games and to store all the user files for my home network. As I haven't installed / uninstalled much I thought that I was unlikely to benefit much from that approach....

Thanks again

Gavin

A clean install only if you have a myriad of unfathomable errors, at the very least it would (or should) set up a clean platform for SP1 (about 70MB I believe) to come down via Windows Updates. Other than that there should be no big downloads except any installed programs you require. Vista and Office have DVD or CD to install from.

I'm not much at the overclocking side of things, I just let things bubble along at the Bios safe defaults, anyway my Bios is as simple as me and doesn't have much to fiddle with.

Also to find windows version go into the Control Panel and select System. It should say Service Pack 1 near the top.

1. to find if SP1 or not..click orb --> type winver click enter. read what it says.
2. Problems with installing SP1 can be many facets.
I have had 99% success to install SP1 - I have corrected with the following below info. 1% I have had to FORMAT-Clean install then upgrade.
1. make sure you NO BETA DRIVERS INSTALLED.
1a. Many Video drivers will cause major problems so use only the WDM recommended drivers.
2. Download the FULL ISO from MS for the standalone version.
3. run Vista Upgrade advisor and remove any item listed as possible or will create a conflict.
4. If you need drivers for some 3rd party item install it via F6 before you start the upgrade.

Here are official links to obtain Vista SP1 standalone install.
