Sound "hangs"

Occasionally my sound will "hang" for a few minutes. When this happens, all sounds that the computer trys to play go into an apparent buffer. Once the sound unhangs, all the sounds in the buffer play normally.

The really annoying part is that programs will stop responding until some sounds are played.

Any ideas how to fix this? I thought it might be my sound card (on-board) so I disabled it and bought an Audigy 2. This seemed to fix it for awhile, but it has started happening again.

Thanks in advance.

if your system doesn't meet the requirements of the program you're trying to run, the graphics will hang (wait) for the sound to catch up.

This can happen anywhere in the system, but it has happened even close to startup just clicking the start menu.

try changing your sound scheme to something else or disable the sound scheme and see if it works..could be a corrupted file
