Sound issues with Speedtouch 330

I've been using this PC for a few years now, and I've had an internal ADSL modem for almost its entire life. However, that has its own problems, so I thought I would try the Speedtouch modem that I recieved for free when changing ISP.
Since I installed the modem, the sound output from my computer skips frequently and regularly. A very short sample of sound is repeated once, and then the sound continues. For example, a drum beat may be played twice in fast succession.
This is a system wide problem, occuring with anything that outputs sound.
It is definately the modem that is the problem: if I uninstall the driver the problem does not occur.
However, the problem does occur as long as the modem is installed - it does not go away if I unplug the modem, try in a different usb socket/controller, close the software, or restart the computer.
There is no IRQ sharing with either the modem or the sound card. The modem is on its own USB controller.
I've contacted Speedtouch, but I was wondering if it was a more general windows issue that could be fixed with your help.

The sound is from an Integrated Realtek ALC655 AC'97 IC (

I updated to the latest driver earlier today which did not fix the problem.
Motherboard is a gigabyte GA-8PENXP(Rev 1.x) (

I am using a speedtouch 330 (

with the latest driver
Windows XP SP2 has been updated with all patches
DirectX is version 9.0C (dxdiag shows no issues)
The problem occurs when outputting through either DirectSound or waveOut
I have never had this problem before installing this modem.

What happens when you uninstall the modem? Some modems(not sure if this is case with yours) load wave device drivers which come from the OS;

If I uninstall the driver the problem does not occur.

I'm not sure why this driver is affecting my sound output. It has no sound output itself.

Ahh, but that does not mean it does not have sound. ATl0 in a modem's init string will turn off sound.
I think it is a wave device problem and there is some conflict.
When you install the driver, check device manager for any exclamation marks to see if it flags something.

I see no exclamation marks in device manager. I have also looked in the driver inf file and found nothing that appears to relate to the wave device.

I was experimenting with system restore yesterday, and I restored to before the modem was installed. The problem was still apparent, but I have no recallection at all of this problem extending more than a few days into the past, after the time of the restore point. It is possible that this problem is caused by winamp 5.3, as this is the only other change I can think I made to the system recently.

Winamp 5.3 included quite a few changes (

like support for 24 bit sound output. I noticed that unlike previous builds, it requires a restart after installation. This could be causing the problems. However the issue still remains if I restore the system to before 5.3 was installed.

I have noticed that it is also apparent with the windows logon sound, meaning it is something that starts before you get to the desktop. I do not have the winamp agent that runs on startup installed, so it can't be within the program itself.

Any ideas?
