hello all! A friend gave me a Dell Dimension XPS B866 to repair. I had to harvest a CD ROM, hard drive, and video card from another Dell to install into this one, as well as wipe the HD and reinstall the OS. I believe it came with Windows ME; however, I have installed 98 instead. (I don't have ME)

ANYWAYS, everything works fine EXCEPT there is no sound at all. I installed the correct sound card drivers, and under device manager there is no conflict. It LOOKS like it is playing a sound when I test it, but there is no sound.

There are 3 yellowed items still under device manager:

1. PCI Ethernet Controller- it has a NIC card, but he is using dial up so I don't believe it is a big issue.

2. PCI System Management Bus - I think this may be part of the problem, but we have no Dell Resource CD so I cannot find the drivers for this item.

3. Unknown Device -?

I am thinking about trying the chipset drivers - Also, should I try to Flash the BIOS? Would that fix the Bus problem?

Any and all answers are greatly appreciated.

THANX!

As far as flashing the bios goes, I dont think you need to do that since you are going backwards from ME to 98. Since you dont have the resource cd, look to see what kind of motherboard is in there and go to there website and download all of the drivers for it. This is most likely the reason that your sound is not working. If that doesn't fix your problem then your sound card is toast.
