Sound card paranoia! 1

Folks, maybe you can help-
System: WinMe, P4 2.4GHz, packardbell "columbia" mobo
Soundcard is a SB Audigy (the first version)
Up to date drivers, the lot.

The soundcard works, but loses the signal to the speakers when doing anything other than the test sequence for the card! That is, when I run the speaker/card diagnostic, the speakers work (it sends voice to the speakers in turn, "right speaker" and so on.

However, when trying to plat a CD or the like, zilch!
Device manager claims everything's working, onboard sounds is diabled, the test sequece runs fine every time. All sound files are pointing to the soundcard correctly. They appear to be playing OK, but no sound.

Any ideas as to what I might be missing?

What software are you using to play the Cd? Make sure the volume control in the software it turned up and make sure your software mixer controls are all turned up and not muted.

Sounds like "two sound control panels" one creative and the other, system, somewhere along the way there is a wrong setting in one of these control panels, maybe digital is enabled or the main volume is turned off or muted.

Software volume is OK.
Paparazi, the two controllers was something I checked. The main "system" volume controls (the one that has main volume, recorder level and the like) is not muted, main level at max. I did think that maybe with the onboard sound disabled, that there might be a break in the lines of communication, so to speak. What bugs me the most is that the diagnostics work perfectly!

If the problem occurs only when playing audio CD's, then make sure that the audio cable is securely and correctly connected to the sound card and the CD-ROM drive.

If it occurs when playing sounds in all formats and the onboard sound is disabled in Device Manager, then look for a MB jumper or in BIOS for a setting to disable the onboard audio.
If there's a jumper or a BIOS setting, then disable the onboard sound with that, and uncheck its Disable box in Device Manager.

If that's N/A, then start in Safe mode, uninstall the sound card's software in Add/Remove Programs, remove all sound cards from Device Manager except the onboard adapter, restart normally, let Windows recognize the sound card, and reinstall its drivers.

If no luck, then install the latest sound card drivers from the manuf's site.

For the CDROM properties in the control panel set the sound to Digital. Otherwise you need a sound cable from the optical drive to the sound card - IN.

Check "Multimedia" Properties in Control panel also .....use dropdown box to choose your SoundCard....tick "use preferred devices only"
