I have five columns A, B, C, D and E. E is the calculated column coming out out calculations from A,b, C and D. All of this columns are grouped. The report is currently sorted by A. But I wante the report to be sorted by E. Is there a way to do it. I have tried different ways without luck.

We are using Impromptu 6.0

A few questions first:

Why are ALL of your columns grouped?

Having the column names (what the columns consist of) instead of A, B, C, D, E may help me better understand why all of your columns are grouped.

I am not sure what all you have tried but..

Report (from main menu) --> Query
Choose the Sort tab.
Make sure none of the fields shown are sorted. (select all and choose Don't Sort button.)

Choose your column E and click the Ascending or Descending button.

Reasoning: You must remove all sorts first because.. if both A and E are sorted and A is shown to be above E then A will be the first sort priority.

Let me know if this helps or please respond with further information/ways you tried to sort.

timepasse,

As it would happen, I just had a similar situation yesterday. The report is grouped on all of those columns because subtotals are required. In my case, I was also doing an "Auto-Group", to get a group by clause in the SQL for performance benefits. In my particular instance I needed to group a project report by owning business unit and project type, rolled up to the second level of the project. One of the grouped aggregates was Revenue. The client wanted the final report sorted by descending revenue before second level org, which was not allowed directly within Impromptu.

Once you have items grouped in your report, Impromptu will not let you sort in an order that violates the grouping, within the same report.

One way around this, and the solution I used, was to put this unsorted version of the report into the catalog, as a smart hotfile. I was then able to pull all of the same data from the report into a second report that was not itself grouped (that happens in the first report), and thus was able to be sorted anyway I want.

I hope this helps you.
