Sorting alphabets

I tried sorting and only successful fot the numeric ones. is there a special term i need to use inorder to sort by characters or alphabets?

Yes. Forgot to say I solved it. I found something that I like to share with others with want to sort. If you have alot of fields, Place the one that you want to sort in the first position. I made this mistake and keeps wondering why it keeps sorting the number........ then I tried to switch the position.
