somone is connected to my pc

I've seen where someone can connect to someones drive over a network and when that person shuts down, it will tell them that the other person will be disconnected.

Can anyone tell me what other possibilities are here? Why else can this happen. Machine is win98.

A mapped drive on another machine that points to a shared folder on your macine will cause this notice. You can see who it is and what file or folder by running 'Netwatcher'. If it's not already installed you should find it in add/remove windows components.

What kind of network? Lantastic notifies the user that others are connected and the network when a server shuts down.

NT 4.0 network. I'm thinking someone just connected to a share on the pc but the person says the drive is not shared?

We have network mapped drives when you log on.

Do you have a printer attached to that computer that others share?

My home office uses NetBeui, shared files/folders/printers and mapped drives. When I close down a machine that is connected to another, I get the same message. It's just a warning that you will be disconnected and that if the other machine is using a shared resource, it'll get cut off. No biggy.

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!

I don't think the printer is shared. We do have network printers. Don't have netbeui installed. No files were shared of the machine though?

Go to START -> PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> SYSTEM TOOLS -> NETWATCHER

It will show who is connected and any files they have open.


If it is not installed, go to START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS -> WINDOWS SETUP TAB -> SYSTEM TOOLS and put a check mark beside "Net Watcher". Click OK and again OK.

It should copy some files and then you can do my first suggestion to see who is doing what. Also, it might ask you for the Windows 98 setup files in which case you can either (A) insert the CD (if you have it) or (B) If you dont have the CD on hand, try pointing it to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS as the path to the CAB files.
