Some Wiered problem with my Screen and Windows XP

Hi Guys,

Everything was working properly however, maybe someone changed some setting in my system. The problem at the moment is when I change the Screen Resolutions looks like the objects doesn't change the size. It is bit hard to explain but I try: Let is say I am changing the screen Resolution to 1152 / 864, resolution is getting changed but everything remains the same size. EG start Menu disappears and then I have to move the mouse down then the Screen flips down and start menu appears however a portion of the top of the screen disappers.

I have a 17inch monitor.

What can go wrong here?

Make sure that this hasn't been set for a 'virtual desktop' at say 1024 x 768. You should be able to recognise a virtual desktop because you will be able to scroll across the edge boundaries when using a higher resolution that the 1024 x 768.

I don't think I have installed the addins for the virtual desk top yet. And I can't see multiple desktop icon in taskbar either.Is that what you are referring to?

Could you please explain it more if it is something else?

what else can go wrong?

The 1280x1024 LCD panel on my laptop will happily do something weird like 4096x1200, but it scrolls a huge desktop around the screen. If I hook up an external CRT, it'll display it like it's in 1600x1200 but with tons of extra horizontal pixels. (CRTs don't have a max horizontal resolution...)

The moral: LCDs have a maximum resolution that's often lower than the video card's maximum. The video card knows this and scrolls an oversized image around. If you know your monitor is capable of directly displaying the resolution you're asking it for, try telling the computer it's a generic monitor.

Virtual desktop is another possibility.

Hi Joe,

It was working fine before. This issue is happened just recently. Probably someone changed it as I was away at work. The normal size was 1152 / 864 and when one day I got from work I got this issue so I changed the size to 1024.

I dont' think it is LCD or Virtual desktop issue. My gut feeling is someone has changed it from the Monitor settings though I tryed everything to fix it but didn't work.

Is there a way to set my monitor to its Manufacturer settings? the way I bought it new?

Hi Buddy,

I did that options already but it didn't work. What I mean
is how can reset my physical monitor's setting, the one that is set by its buttons, to its MFR original settings.

Depending on what controls are on the Monitor (usually at the bottom) there may be a "factory reset" option in the control which aligns the screen. Have a look at any documentation that came with the Monitor or contact the manufacturer.

I found that option too. It is called recall in my monitor
i reset that option. Still the same error. My monitor is AOC 17inch.

I don't know if the problem is with the monitor, or Driver, or some settings in OS?

Any chance of trying a different Monitor in case yours is faulty?

How does your current one handle the Display in Safe Mode?

"At least 85 Hz vertical refresh rate is recommended for classic displays." Did you try this as 60 seems a bit low?

I have found the standard frequency on a 17" to be at 75Hz. I once fiddled about with the drivers on my laptop and got near enough what you are getting here.
Optimum resolution settings for a 17" are 1024x768 @75Hz

With some monitor types, what happens when you enlarge the desktop area is an enlargement which goes past the physical screen size and does not shrink to fit the screen. If that doesn't make sense:
When changing your screen resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 (or greater) you may find that you have to move the mouse pointer to the edge of the screen to "scroll" the left, right, top or bottom of the screen into view. As mentioned, the desktop area has not matched the physical size of your "viewable screen area".

My first suggestion, look for the correct video drivers. I would think someone has installed new video drivers onto your PC in an attempt to get a better resolution on the monitor. It could very well be that neither graphics card nor monitor support a size larger than 1024x768 which would result in this "effect".

Linney: 60Hz normally on a flat panel monitor as optimal.

Just because I answered a question about an upside down display this morning, check that the video card and its driver software does not have some sort of mode for adjusting the screen position.

If it does not, see if a new video driver software does have such features.

(In the upside down case, there was a key sequence to flip the display orientation).

Based on the suggestions above I will do as following:

1- Un install the vedio driver and re-install it from the CD that comes with my system board? - it was working in the first place with this driver as I did the initial set up.

2- change "At least 85 Hz vertical refresh rate is recommended for classic displays" from 60 to 85?

How can i do this change???

3- alternatively download the latest driver from SIS website? what information do i need to download the best and latest one? "SiS 661FX_760_741_M661FX_M760_M741"?????

I've got the exact same problem on a new computer with same onboard video, with fresh XP install.
I've tried the default driver, the ASROCK website lists the same one so I didn't bother with it, and I tried the one mentioned above, and always the same thing. Anything over 1024 and the screen just scrolls around. It's not the monitor because it worked on the last computer at 1280 no problem.

any ideas? did you fix it?

I fixed it by switching the monitor. No explanation as to why that should have fixed it, because that monitor was fine before, but it did.

My problem was fixed after I uninstalled the correct driver that I downloaded and the driver that was comming with my system board. XP picked it as default monitor and that issue was fixed!

I don't know the reason. Looks dodgie!
