how would i know on which physical subnet a machine is sitting on... if i see different interfaces and different subnets per interface.. so my question is.. are subnets bound to physical location or no? just trying to understand a bit more.. thanks in advance..

Your subnet is more defined by the nearest routers. So yes, when you connect to the network, WHERE you connect pretty much defines which subnet you are on.

How you tell which subnet you are on? If there is a DHCP server on that subnet, it can tell you when your IP is assigned. If there's another working machine on that subnet, you can check it's config. You can ask the network admin what subnet you are on.

If /etc/netmasks is set up correctly you can look in there too.
