Hi, Unix Gurus ...

I installed Solaris 8 on an Ultra1 using the two Software CDs 10/00 (not the WebInstall!) At the end I expected to be asked to choose CDE or OW. As a practising Luddite, I wanted OW, but the question never came up. When the system boots, the login screen doesn't give me the option to choose OW; all it has is CDE, Last Desktop and Safe login (or something like that!)

Not only that, but I can't start OW from the command line. Perversely, in one of the CDE windows is a host of OW apps, eg cmdtool.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

OW is no longer included by default in Sol 8 distributions (not sure about Sol 7). You will have to find a way to install it from Sol 2.6 CD set, then either plumb it in as an option at the CDE login, or replace CDE with OW and disable the CDE login, or leave it to startup from command line once CDE has done it's excercises.
I wouldn't like to try it, but it's theoretically possible.

Good luck ! Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life

OW was included with Solaris 7 but it was stated that CDE was the way things were going and OLWM was there for bachwards compatibility.

it still installs it with 8, as far as i can see, but it will keep giving you warnings along the lines of 'this system is going, and will not exist much longer, and i don't like it' and ask you if you really want it since the makers don't support it.

nice and friendly like.

it'll also ask you if you run any individual openwin applications (anything from /usr/openwin/bin is included) if you really want to do this since there are nice dt applications that do (roughly) the same job.

by the way, anyone with solaris 7 and solaris 8, what do you think of the revamped removable media manager ... from my experience i'd go expletive over the new one :)
