I need to install the Solaris Management Console version 2.0 onto a server running Solaris 8.

I have managed to dowload The Solaris 8 Admin Pack but this only contains version 1.01 of the SMC.

I have found the SUNWmc etc. packages on one of my original Solaris 8 04/01 cd's but am not sure what order to install them in and if i will need any other packages.

1. Can I get hold of SMC 2.0 as a full install similar to the Admin Pack? (either download or is it on the origibal 8 04/01 cd's?)

OR failing that

2. How do i install from the packages i.e. what order do i need to isnatll the packages in and what other packages will i need?

I am not a big fan of SMC, but why are you trying to use such an old version? Last I heard they were at version 3.5 which is *suppose to be* significantly better then any other versions made.

Hi Coffeysm

To be honest the only reason I wish to look at the SMC is because I want to evalute RBAC and thought it would be easier to manage using the gui as none of the example documentation i have found provide a clear explanation of using it from the the command line.

RBAC doesnt seem to be in the 1.01 release of SMC but I beleive it is in 2.0

I will happily look at a later release if a) this is available and b) doesnt require numerous other solaris patches etc.

We work on the basis of if it aint broken dont fix it and so only apply patches when needed.

Ahh ok, well I know the newer version can be a monster to install. As far as RBAC goes, I messed with it a little bit and mostly copied some of the examples they had. You need to also make sure thay there user shell is either pfsh, pfcsh, pfksh, etc... /etc/exec_user, and I think three files under the /etc/security directory.
