Initally got no sound from my microphone. By following the Microsft microphone troubleshoot checklist, I undid the mute and the select, and set the recording property and the mic boost. But now a wierd thing happens. When I speak into the microphone, my amplified voice comes out of the computer speakers. But Sound recorder and other mic-enabled programs do not pick anything up. So clearly, everything about the mic is working, but the sound is not making it to the software. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Need to know much more about
what OS?
What phone/fax software
Nero?
U have a Multimedia Icon in Control Panel?
r u sure your not plugged into "line in" in mobo/soundcard?
what soundcard?

SorryTale,

As TT4U points out -we really need specific info to help the best!

However, taking a wild guess -do this:

Control Panel => Sounds and Audio Devices => Volume => Advanced => Options => Properties => Recording => OK

Now make sure that the mic ch. has been checked and the levelfader is turned up (beware of feedback or distortion!!).

This is how it works in WinXP, anyway.

Good Luck §;O)

Thanks for trying to follow up with me. Suggestion did not work with my OS. Here are my details

98SE
Riptide PCI
I have the Multimedia Icon. Recording device is Riptide
Only use preferred device is checked (tried it both ways)
Fax software is quicklink III
No Nero

I do not have anything for telephony that did not come with 98SE. I am plugged in the right jack, though for some reason my speaker has to plug into the modem card instead of the sound card (maybe its rigged for speakerphone software?). Speakers don't play if I plug them in the soundcard.

The strange part is, this worked fine at one point, with the same hardware configuration. Unfortunately, I havent used the MIC in two years, so I don't know what changed when.

Thanks again for giving this a stab.

Try recording some other sounds using Sound Recorder (not via the mic).

If it does, that means your sound card is probably all right.

Give us a reply.

Good luck.

Alrighty;
This can get a bit confusing and frustrating....so hold on
I'll try to help...don't want your sys to come crashin' down
You have to ask yourself, how important is my Phone/fax setup right now...in case playing with the config, temporarily disables it...
IMO...Your mic should be plugged into "Mic In" ....and Speakers into Spkr(line out) on Soundcard....and then make everything else work with/around that....
I have 98, a USRobotics PCI 56k Internal voice/data/fax modem...and it works fine with mic/speaker in soundcard for phone software...(the phone software should add it's own serialui.dll in Device manager under
Sound Cards..)
If you go to into.....Right click My Computer>.....choose properties> Device Manager>Sound Video and Game Controllers.....whatcha got.....?...do you have a "Wave device for a voice modem" listed., along with soundcard?
though for some reason my speaker has to plug into the modem card instead of the sound card (maybe its rigged for speakerphone software?)
which is why when you choose soundcard in
Multi-media Properties>Audio>Preferred Device>Playback/Recording..you get zilch.....
This also tells me that your soundcard isn't set up correctly

go to
Multi-media Properties>Devices>Audio Devices....I have 2,.... 1 for soundcard, 1 for serial wave device...and there, under my USRobotics Serial Wave Device>properties..I have "do not map thru this device" checked, which prevents my mic from coming thru spkr's whilst on phone(i think).......
yet under "Soundcard" it's "unchecked"(so it "is" mapped thru)
Do you have listed under Control Panel>Multimedia Properties>Devices
1)Audio Devices (2)
2)MIDI Devices and Instruments (2)
3)Mixer Devices (1)
4)Line Input Devices(1)

I'm not familiar with your soundcard and/or quicklink III,......so take what I say cautiously
You may have to enable an Internal MIDI Synth to replicate a voice for voicemodem....

This can get very confusing and there are so many different config's possible(especially when you involve the COM ports as well)....so you'll just have to play with it(sorry to say).....

If you want to mess with it...Uninstall phone/fax software (you'll need the program to re-install it, if you do this)....

Again I probably would get the soundcard working correctly, then integrate the phone/fax program, but that's just me.....

Thought u atleast deserved some kind of a lopsided reply from me....so
Wishin' u well

Thanks very much for all who replied, especially tektippy. I will not be able to test this as I am on my way out of town and not at my home (problem) computer, but will give it a try when I return in two weeks.
