i already have a 18GB running on OS Win2k server
can i put another 18GB and use software RAID on it without damaging the data on the primary drive ?

As far as I know you cannot software raid a system partition. If you have the OS on another harddrive, and you want to mirror this drive that is strictly for data, it will work like you say, but if you have one drive, with one partition on which w2k is installed, you will not be able to mirror that drive with software raid.

if i put a hardware raid in and mirror the drive off, will it damage anthing on the OS partition ?

A lot of raid controllers support this, especially if we're talking SCSI which I think we are. The only thing I'd be worried about is the OS being able to recognize the RAID controller on the fly.

I've honestly never even tried it before. Is there any special reason why you can't rebuild the machine with the new hardware? I know it can be time consuming, but it never hurts to get a fresh install going anyway.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpfull, anyone ever tried adding a RAID controller to a machine like this?

thanks traivs, you been more than helpful, yes total scsi,

when ide first came out with raid, it was up to my spec and expectation, just not anywhere near scsi
still i think scsi rocks on raid

i will give it a try on adaptec 2100S

just love my compaq ml370 with 5300, it screams lol
