Anyone know if the heat sink and fan that come with 1.70 gigahertz Intel Celeron can be used with a Pentium 4 2.8 or 3.06 gigahertz processor?

I'm trying to decide on just the cpu or a boxed set upgrade.

Thanks, Dave

the P4 processors in that range produce a lot more heat, I wouldn't take the chance and just order the retail box.

The new P4 cpu fans use a copper core. If you like to dammage the new cpu use the old heat sink and you will have shutdowns etc.
Use the retail box, even this might not be good enough

There are lots of examples of heating probs with 2.8 and above. For sure, if you use the old one you will have problems. You need, at least, the correct one or one with the copper core, as mentioned by jurgen36.

Also, you will likely need further fan flow onto the processor in addition to that copper-core heatsink\fan combo.

As both people above said, use the correct one. Even better would be to order a better one at, say, newegg.com.
I say this as i have read so many times about heating issues with those intels from 2.8 and above.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Looks like a boxed set and/or copper core and fan it is.

Thanks to all for the info.
