SMTP UNable To Relay

Greetings I have a server with Windows 2000. I have outlook as my client. We have a separate company that host our web site and mail. Recently i got my mail account, we are using POP3 and SMTP.

Here is the problem: When i go to send email i get a message saying unable to relay, then something about denied by the ip address of the server. I can ping the server and default gtwy. I went to the services to see if SMTP was running but did not see it. I am the only one thats unable to send mail although i can receive just find. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. So do you have an exchange server in house?? Or somekind of mail server INSIDE your protected network?

Telnet into it and try and send a message..

telnet IP ADDY 25

you should get a banner

type helo

type mail from:some@address.com

type mcpt to:whoever@whereever.com

data

blalblablalblalblalballbalbla
. (make sure you put a PERIOD on an empty line, hit enter)


and then look for an error message..

no no exchange server in house. Just a windows 2000 server thanks though

does your mail server require "My server requires authentication" to be checked? Try checking it. if this doesnt work;who is your internet provider? some internet providers only allow outgoing mail to be sent through there servers.

thanks pulloxo that seemed to fix the problem. I was looking at that but it just never registered..
