Hi All,
We have a problem with our Exchange 2003 Server. It appears that whenever anybody sends an Email with an attachment the whole of the internet and VPN tunnels grind to a halt. Everyone get's "Page cannot be displayed" messages in Internet Explorer and VPN tunnels to other sites just freeze. Once the email has been sent, normal service resumes immediately.
This only happens when we forward all our email to a smarthost. If we deliver all email via DNS, then yes the Internet and tunnels do slow down slightly, but they are useable. The trouble is, if someone sends an Email attachment of say 1Mb to 10 other people, suddenly you can have up to 10 queues sitting there trying to get the mail out, and therefore it's slower yes... but for much longer.
As previously stated when using a smarthost, it does not matter if the email has a 500K attachment or a 10Mb attachment, everything still freezes up until the Email has gone. We have a 256K in / 2Mb out ADSL connection.
My questions are then... Is there anyway I can limit the outgoing bandwidth of the mail connection, to say 100K, leaving 156K for other tasks. I don't want to limit users from sending large messages, or restrict when Emails are sent. This is crucial for our organisation. Or any other suggestions?
Thanks
Darren
