Hi All

I'm looking for a method of viewing machine serial numbers without having to go round every machine. (we are running w2k)
I have found a couple of utilities and a script that allows me to do this.
The problem is that it works fine on all our newer Dell machines but I can't get the script to return a serial number on any of our older machines.
I've had a dig around and found that I need SMBIOS version 2.1 installed on each machine.

I have a couple of questions

1. What is SMBIOS?
2. How do I update the older machines to this version?
3. Can I do this remotely from my pc?

Many Thanx

Hi,

Sorry but your link returns a NotFound error.

The machine serial number is the number that is given in the bios of the machine. Some people call it the asset tag. It stays with the machine even if you reinstall the operating system etc. I guess the only way to get rid of it would be to flash the bios

My link was just a Google search for SMBIOS
