Hi All,

If I join an online game, often, shortly after, my pc will freeze and I get some noise emitting from my speakers.
Only a reboot will get me out of the freeze.

Could it be my small cooler fan (not the processor heatsink fan) that occasionaly stops that causes the problem?
Or, could it be that i need more than 256mb of memory.

Basically, what can cause my online games to freeze?

Many thanks,
Rabod

Several things to look at....
How are you connected to the internet? You need a cable modem or DSL to make online gaming worthwhile. What are your system specs? You should have a fairly speedy machine as well. If there are lots of background processes running on your computer then these could be causing the freeze-ups.
I don't think the fan is the problem, but I'd replace it anyway just to eliminate the possibility, and to keep things cooler.

I have a 512kb Broadband connection and am running with a 1900 athlon processor. when I join the online games I make sure that there are no other apps running in the background (especially not downloading in progress), thus preventing any online lag.
What about a video card fan..........could that keep things happy. If so, do you know of an recomendations.

Thanks

If your machine is freezing up solid and not just for a short time there could be a problem with the game itself. Is it just the one game or any game? What OS are you running?
If it's 98se then check the DirectX diagnostics(programs-accessories-system tools-system information drop the tools menu down and select DirectX Diagnostic tool) Check the network settings tab and see what it says. Might need an update to directX....

Good advice from Rocker, things I would look at:

If it locks up in different programs, consider replacing/uprading your current Graphics Card Drivers, and Motherboard too while you're at it.

After your machine has frozen up, when you reboot can you see your Motherboard/System temperature in the BIOSm and if so what is it?

If it still continues after checking these things try disabling the sound card in windows to see if this effects it at all, after that I might start to look at memory.

It appears that if I play an online game with the side panel of the pc off........then this freeze does not occur.
Thus, telling me that this must be a cooling problem. Surly.

It would indeed ;)

Might be worth looking at improving case ventillation and/or the CPU fan.

I'm very happy with all the replies I've had.
How do I close this forum?

I'm off to get a new fan and check out other ways to help the ventilation. I'll be back if it all goes wrong .lol

Cheers all,

Rabod

Good luck ;)

(you don't technically close the thread, you just wrap up with a post such as your last)
