I have Win 2000 setup with 3 user accounts. 2 are Administrator accounts the third is a standard user.

The problem I am encountering is when I logon as my administrator account at work and run a couple of applications that access data on our NT server the speed is very sluggish when it comes to data retrieval or saving new data.

However, when I logon as my other administrator account or my standard user account that also run applications accessing data on the NT the speed is not a problem. Retrieving and saving data is instantaneous.

What can I do to my default administrator logon to increase it's speed or is this even a problem with Win 2000?

Thank you in advance for your help.

look in task manager and see if anything is taking up a lot of processor time.

The only item that seems to be taking up excessive time is 'System Idle Process' which is just over 2:30 and seems to be continuously increasing. All the other processes are under 15.

sorry, look under cpu column, see if anything but system idle process i eating up cpu

Could be a lot of things. Generally the default admin does take a little bit longer but no more that say 20 seconds max. Have you got roaming profiles? Steve Hewitt

Thanks guys for your help so far. Here is the answer to your questions plus a little more detailed information.

Looking at my task manager, of course the System Idle process is the winner by far in CPU usage. There are but a handful, approximately 9, other processes that have numbers under CPU or a fraction of CPU time. This morning the laptop has been up and running for just over 45 minutes and these 9 processes are all showing CPU times of less than 15 seconds.

As for roaming profiles. No, I do not have any.

I don't know if this will help you at all but the Administrator account that is slow is one that I created right after purchasing the laptop. The default administrator account is fine speed wise.

Also, the application that seems to give me the most problems is a Visual Basics application connecting to a MySQL database structure through a system DSN. I'm using the updated MySQL ODBC driver 3.51.

Thanks again.

try saving any data, deleting the user's foler in documents and settings, then log back on to create the local profile.

Try this: Right-click on 'My Computer' and then click on user profiles. Check out the size of the account that you use (that is slow). I had this problem once and the user account size was over 18MB! Limit the size and it should be fine. Currently mine is at 3MB and runs perfectly.

Hey Guys,

Thanks EchoEcho for the advice on deleting the profile folder then re-logging in to recreate it. That worked perfect. Sure is nice to be able to retrieve and save data within the same hour. You da man.

Thanks SoulAssassin for your advice also. Even though I had already performed the steps recommended by EchoEcho I will keep your information for future reference.

Thanks again guys.

SoulAssassin,

i have the same problem with two or more of the computers in our office network. when i read your option i checked it out and i found out my user is currently at 1G(!) and runs slightly slower than a snail.

My question is how exactly do you limit it?

hope to hear from you very soon!

You can Limit the User Quota if u go into these steps :

1- My Computer ---> right click on the Main Partion ( sysem Partion C: by default )

2- Properties -----> Quota

3- select Quota Entries

4- From the New Window , Select New Quota from Quota Menu

5- Select the User You want to Restrect the Quota for him, by add new quota.

You have to be Admin on the PC.
