Slow Shutdown?

I have recently upgraded a laptop from WINNT to Windows XP. I notice when selecting to shutdown or restart the machine from the start menu, from the time you click on what to do it will just sit there for about 2 minutes and let u carry on clicking start etc and eventually it will decide it is going to log off and shutdown, what is holding it up?

Problem Solved.

Seem's Roxio CD writing software was the problem.....

Hung applications most likely. This service tool can help:

So:

. sort HAL and APM issues
. Make registry changes to accomodate slow or hung apps:

. Consider using a shortcut or .bat or .cmd file utilizing the reskit or 3rd-party shutdown utilities
