Just a quick question... when I reinstalled my XP Pro a couple of weeks ago I noticied that when 'clean' it shuts down within a few seconds (guestimate approx 10secs).

I have of course since then installed various programs (nothing too heavy or elaborate)and naturally expect this to have an affect, it is now taking approx 50 secs and don't know if this is normal standard!

Thanks

Windows xp seems quite easy to disturb in its shutdown process. I have noticed on a few machines at work that shutdown seems to take a lot longer as soon as you have installed a couple of programs.

Look here for a good guide on troubleshooting windows xp shutdown problems and it should give you some tips on what to try and do to get the speed back.

Thanks for the link, will check it out.

I have to say that I do prefer the faster boot speed (approx 30secs) and can live with the slower shutdown!

If you are using XP SP2 it is possible that your system is applying windows update patches at shutdown time.

Check your windows update settings.

Main things that can affect system shutdown times:

o Number of tasks running (look at your system tray, kill any that you don't NEED.. like QuickTime launcher, WinAmp)
o Number of unneccessary processes running (do you *need* microsoft office startup or fast find?)
o Shutdown sound (if it's a large file, or a corrupt one)
o Anti-virus (a lot of anti-virus software, Nortons especially, will check your floppy drive and so forth before allowing the system to shut down)
o Tasks that aren't taking a shutdown command cleanly (this is evident if it comes up with the "End Now" dialog box)

Hope this stuff helps!
