Slow Public Folders

Where would I start to look as for the reason why the public folders are responding very slowly? Basically Outlook just sits there, with the egg timer, sometimes for several minutes just to display the message, once displayed the attachment is quick to open.

The folders are on the same machine as the Private stores which are running fine.

I just started getting the same symptoms on one of our mailboxes. It suddenly slowed down, where it takes about a minute to open a small message. Once the message has been read, it opens/moves/copies at regular speed. I thought it may be the size of the mailbox as it had about 20,000 messages in it, but after clearing most of that, there was still no performance improvement. If anybody has an idea...
