Hi everyone,

I been trying to figure out how to solve this slow logon into my server problem. Mainly are those users using XP and have access to the internet. I finally for the ones using XP but not using internet. I put the address of the server on the DNS and disable offline files and those machines logon fast. BUT for those with internet access those take a long time to logon. When I add the address of the server on the DNS then can access the internet? Is there any way to fix that.

Thanks
Chavito

Why is XP running slower while logon 1

When I login into a Windows 2000 active directory from a new xp pro machine the login in is extremely slow. After logged on, everything works fine. But other windows versions don't have this problem.
A: This is almost like name resolution issue. Comparing with previous versions, XP is heavily dependent on DNS to find DC. If the DNS is configured incorrectly, XP will take longer time waiting for it to timeout before it tries using NetBIOS. Make sure
1) The DNS setup correct and have the server information.
2) XP clients can find the DNS server.
3) XP machine's DNS server is pointed to your internal DNS server rather than your ISP's DNS server.
4) Make sure no errors on logon scripts or GPO's that could be causing the delay.
5) Check any errors on event viewer.
6) Disable NetBIOS on the interfaces that client will not use.

Make sure the IP address of the server is listed first in your list of DNS servers on the workstation.

If I list my IP address from my server first then I lose my internet access. I found If I put the address of the server as WIN it seems to be booting pretty fast and get on the internet. but I can't understand why.!or if this is going to affect something else.

You need to add your ISPs DNS servers to the forwarders tab of the DNS server on the domain controller.

Open the DNS console, right click on the server object and go to properties. Click on the forwarders tab, enable forwarders, and enter the IP addresses of your ISPs DNS servers.

Point all of your clients to the DC for DNS. Any queries for names outside your network will be forwarded to the ISP.

If you can give me ipconfig/all results for both server and the XP PC then we can start troubleshooting your problem. Here in TT if you ask ipconfig/all result they will give you another info instead and you can only have it when nothing else is working already. Maybe now there's an exemption, no offense it's just an observation:).

Don't do XP, (Sorry, not a believer yet), but I found a very similar problem with W2K pro. Turned out to be that part of the problem was browsing was turned on on the pro machines. Turn it off and disable it in the registry, you'de be surprised how much faster the machines are. I'll try and do some research and send more details.
