I've got a user running win2ksp3, as all other machines on the network do.
Their bandwidth is about 20Kb/s on the intranet, on a 100mb/s link. logging in takes ~3 minutes, even when creating a new profile. also, accessing network shares seems to take a while, longer than on any other computer in the office.
accessing local folders is the normal near-instant response time.

I checked the settings on the adapter and it's set to 100baseTx full duplex, the switch he runs through is autodetect. I can't find any settings on his pc that are different from anyone else. His LAN drop is good to go, because he can login/etc and access the internet at normal t-1 speeds.

anyone run into this problem before? it almost seems like some kind of permissions problem, like win2k has to reverify him every 2 seconds or something.

Is the DNS on that machine setup correctly. The client should only be pointing to the server, the server should only be pointing at itself.

Ash.

indeed it is, all network settings are identical to the pc in the next office. at least server-wise. running dhcp, getting an ip no problem

searching on google the only other possibility I found was a bad cat5 cable. I tired a new one of those too, still very slow.

it takes about 2-2.5 minutes total from entering username/pw at the prompt, to all the desktop icons appearing. In comparison, it takes about 15-20 seconds on all other machines in that office, and my own, on a different floor.

I'm running out of ideas, and may just end up copying his important documents to his networked drive and reloading his machine. :(

You should keep in mind couple of things:
1. if the nic is in "autonegociating" mode and negociation fail, then the link is dropped to 10Mbps.
So i suggest you to set to autosensing -half duplex mode and do the testing.
2. Do you have single NT domain spread over wan?
If yes, this might be the reason.
