My Win98 system has become more and more prone to freezing and crashing. I have tried to progressively get rid of unnecessary stuff, but I still get these anomalies:

--Settings>Control Panel takes FOREVER to laod (about 50 sec.) -- is this indicative of a particular problem?

--Whenever shutting down, after closing all open applications, I get this window: "Notification Wnd for RNAdmin" with the options of <wait>, <end task> or cancel. Shut down usually works after I hit <end task>, but this screen never use to appear and I wonder if it indicates a problem I can correct to get everything working better.

Many thanks in advance for suggestions!

Yes, the RNAdmin is slowing your system down. The machine in question has Real Player installed on it. It loads on each boot and is a real resource hog...and as you have found is very hard to let go once it's on. Removal of Real Player is a hassle too and usually involves registry editing. My suggestion if you desire to remove it is to use Real Player's uninstaller in the safe mode followed by a registry cleaner that spots dead links (like jvPowertools or Norton's).

To sort out the slow Control Panel, do the following:

* Go to c:\windows
* Find and delete control.ini
* Launch Control Panel

Its a known problem and its down to corruption of the INI file. Deleting it forces Windows to rebuild it, making Control Panel open much quicker (sometimes the file doesn't seem to reappear but Control Panel still works....dunno why...)

Both suggestions to my "Slow control panel..." post worked liked a charm -- many thank! This is the best/most responsive forum of it's type I've seen (FAQ section a great idea and very useful)
