Hello,

I have a w2k server installed running active directory and housing our share drives. When accessing a file from the server the first time it is extremely slow to open. After the first is open, the rest open quickly. All seems to be ok from the server and the workstation. However, a database that is located on the server same drive opens quickly when using my shortcut on the desktop from the clients.

Thanks

Try accessing the shares through My Network Places and to see if it's the same speed or slower.

Thanks for the response aznluvsmc,

Ive tried your advice and when I click the server name thru network places its "just as slow" to bring the share drives up, not the file though. Once there up initially then quick retrieval of files are available.

I'm not sure what the problem could be I will do some more research, if you have any thoughts I would appreciate.

Thanks agian

For one, make sure you've eliminiated all dead network resources... as in, old maps on machines that don't exist and printers that have been removed.

Secondly, check your Master Browser, since you might have issues with it (or in your case more than one, and that's most likely the problem). Here is a small FAQ that can help:

"In space, nobody can hear you click..."

Is this a problem on all clients or just particular ones?

Just particular ones. My computer opens fine even network places but only when I click the zerver machine from my network places it takes a while to open then after that everything opens quickly. Ive took out other master browsers but that did not fix the problem. No error logs in event viewer from the server. On the clients I did have browser issues but I cleared that up and still slow.

Thanks for your replies they are great.

What OS are the clients running?

All clients are running Windows 2000 Pro.
