Prolly a dumb question, but i would be even dumber if i didnt ask, so here goes.
I just read an article showing how to slipstream win xp sp2.
My question is:
When you apply sp2 does sp2 include sp1 as well, or does one need to add sp1 and sp2 together?
If you need both, can you slipstream them all at the same time?
Hope i am not asking anything improper here, if so, sorry, please delete this. My win xp pro is full retail but i am not sure if doing this is ok or not.

Thanks

It is not a dumb question.

Service Pack 2 is inclusive of all hotfixes, patches and security fixes of Service Pack 1 and subsequent Windows Updates. (up to the point of the SP2 release).

If you can, find SP2 on the distributed CDs (they were widely made available to computer stores, large office supplies retailers, included in magazines, etc, and still can be ordered without charge I believe from Microsoft and deliver in 3-5 business days).

Then use this recommendation for the slipstream: Thread779-900263

I got the sp2 cd about 3 weeks ago or so, but thanks anyway!
I will check out that thread. I just read what appears to be a very easy tutorial over at:

Thanks very much. You must be one of the top posters, you are everywhere helping out!

I remember now, I read last week you were going to do this, i just didnt realize you already had!
Do you ever sleep?

I see that it wasnt written by you, my mistake, maybe you do sleep. I was pretty sure you or someone else here was going to do a thread on how to slipstream, but i see this prog seems to really nail it down even better than the one i supplied.

thanks again

I see its also free!
I wonder if you will be the first to reply to my next question?

I was going to write an SP2 slipstream FAQ, until I ran across the utility I posted in Thread779-900263 There are by now several good manual slipstream guides on the net.

I thought it a terrific freeware utility, tested it, and then wrote the thread I linked. I do not have to slipstream all that often, but I found it a terrific little utility to handle the job. And use the utility rather than doing it by hand.

And yes I do sleep. Thank you for your concern garebo. A belated welcome to you to Tek-Tips.

Best,
Bill Castner

Thanks Bill. I have noticed that you are a real pro, you always give great advice, and in a polite, non-condescending way. Thats what is so good about tek-tips, thats why i have that saying in my posts. There are plenty of other fora that will help a person out, providing you dont mind putting up with foul, filthy language and other assorted rudery. Maybe i invented a new word, rudery!
But this is the best one by far!

My next question was going to be:
Can i move my win xp swap file to my usb drive and would that make my system faster. But I remembered i dont always have my usb drive working on bootup and, if i recall, correctly, in the absence of a swap file, win xp will make another one on my c drive. Is that right? I only have the one drive and only the one partition, and then the usb drive that i use for backup and storage. So i dont see that as a smart move, unless i were to partition my c drive and put it in a partition by itself.

Not a smart move.
In addition, I do not believe XP will permit the swap file to be relocated to what it internally views as a removable storage device. So I do not think it possible to begin with.

See Dan Petri's notes:
Again, best wishes,
Bill

I think i will wait til next build and partition my main drive and do it that way, live with it the way it is for now, its not killing me, im running P4 2.4 and a gig of ram and hd is 7200 spin, so i prolly wont get that much more, but i stand to be corrected, theres so much i dont know!

Yeah, probably a better idea not to. USB 2.0 maxes out at just 60MB/s. That's plenty of overhead for transferring files on and off the drive using it as a backup and storage device.

However, you generally don't want to run any kind of bandwidth-hogging process such as video editing, and certainly nothing involved with the OS.

thanks for the info, cdogg.

I just ran that prog, did a slipstream of win xp pro and sp1, and did one for win xp pro w sp2, both went just fine.
The last item on the second page is the only trick part. You actually have to make an iso name with .iso, like winxpprowsp2.iso, like that, or it wont work.
Its not explained all that well about that last part but the rest is real smooth. And at the end it says it is removing temp files but it doesnt quit on its own, you have to exit. Not a prob, just explaining so the next person knows. Still, one should wait about 5 or 10 minutes to let the prog delete the temp files and then exit manually.
Great prog, does it all for you, all you have to do is put the orig win xp pro cd in one drive and the sp update in the other drive, or point the prog to where it is on your hard drive and it does the rest for you.
thanks to Bcastner for that one!
