This often happens when an unauthorized copy of Office is installed and you attempt to update the program through the Office Update System, though there is also a reported problem with it happening with OEM installs as well. There are no fixes on the MS site.
If you've got your original CD cover with the Key on it, borrow a retail copy of office from a friend, uninstall office and reinstall it and call microsoft to reactivate it.
