Hi all,
Looking for some feedback on Sip trunk routers and/or gateways.
I'm going to test 3 or 4 Sip trunks from a local provider on our in-house system.
I have looked at Ingate and the like ($1500.00 or so).
The provider has recommended a routerboard 450.
VERY inexpensive.
I also have a Sonicwall TZ190 router lying around that may be promising.

So, what are you guys using/experienced with?
Looking for good/bad/ugly.
Any and all feedback appreciated!
Whatever I end up doing I will share the experience.

can't really draw much from experience here myself, but there's a SIP COE document on MOL that basically has certified SIP endpoints, trunks etc listed that have been tested. maybe that'll point you in the right direction.

I recently did an install for a customer that is using 30 sip trunks from bandwidth.com, we ended up going with the edgemarc 3500. I'm a pretty bright tech but I would have to admit my SIP knowledge could use some improvement. with that said, using the Interop docs from MOL, the install of the trunks and configuration of the edgemarc was a breeze. I only ran into 1 issue along the way. There is a few telephone numbers that you call..the AA will pick up on the other end but the mitel ignored the early sip signal that is sent back. I opened a case with mitel regarding this and it is supposed to be fixed in 9.0 UR2. Now looking like 10.0

OK...
Half way there...
Thanks guys for the suggestions so far.
We have 2 sip trunks on our in house system now. We opted to have them "burst" to 4.
So, 4 sip trunk licenses on the 3300.
The router that we had before this was a Linksys RV082. It could not quite perform all of the things we needed and I was seriously doubting using it for this app also...
The sip trunk provider suggested using a "routerboard", so he has loaned me one to try out.
Wow...
Ridiculously low price and extremely programmable.
Any of the ethernet interfaces can be programmed/used for Wan/Lan/Dmz whatever.
Right now, we can only use the sip trunks for outgoing calls. Haven't got the incoming figured out yet. We just cut them in 2 nights ago.
The supplier uses a "Metaswitch". We used the Mitel docs to start with but again haven't figured out the incoming yet...
Another wonderful learning curve!
If this routerboard works out I'll be a fan...

Dave

Update...
We figured out the incoming call problem a couple of days later.
It was CUF (carbon unit failure) on our part. Learning curves again...
Anyway, we stuck with the Routerboard for now. There are 2 things that are either obnoxious or issues:
a) It has the capability to perform Qos to the SIP trunk provider so that "downloading Britney Spears videos" doesn't affect the VOIP/SIP. Unsuccessful so far and will try again.
b) It cannot do web filtering natively. Therefore I cannot stop people from accesssing Youtube/Facebook etc in the office. Apparantly you need a web proxy to refer those denials to.

Maybe we can stick the old router in line and use it for that...

Perhaps the new Mitel MBG that has come out since then is a better way to go?
Thing is though, it's another server/appliance...

Thoughts?

Dave
