sip or voip silence compression

hi all
usually this is off by default on sip or voip connections but finding it is on which is annoying some annoying customers. can't see it in programming - does anyone know if it's a setting which can be changed or is it more related to the duplex features of the handset - have tried on 8 button ip and ip8040l models.
