I have 2 domains, one in each location, one DC in each location. I want to get everyone on one domian. I want to remove AD from one machine, join the other domain, then promote it back to a DC. Is there any way for me to join the other domain on the other subnet without transporting the box to the other location? It's a four hour ride.

Can I ssume the two locations are linked by a network ?

Can I assume they are on differnent sub-nets ?

Yes and yes. I have a T1 between them. Each DC is a WINS/DNS/DHCP server for its own subnet. No other DCs or name servers on the subnets. Trust relationship is set up between domains.

I see no reason as to why they wouldn't be able to communicate. As long as the 2 subnets can communicate with each other, it should be rather simple.

Remember to refer the DNS to the DC on the other subnet before trying to join the Domain. You may then want to go into sites and services and setup proper sites to effectively manage repication of the AD

Well, assuming you're right this changes my plan. For some reason I was under the impression that you had to have at least one DC on your local subnet to join a domain.

If my default router on the server I'm looking to join is set to the T1 router, and I have a default route on that router to the other network, I should be able to see it from the other side.

Once I join the domain, it shouldn't be an issue to set up the DNS forward lookup zones, WINS, and replication.

Anyone else want to chime in before I take the leap?

Justin is spot on - this is exactly what I have done.

Set up sites in the AD first with each subnet set up as this just keeps it all tidy when the other DC joins.

On the DC you are going to DCPROMO first set the DNS server to be the one at the other site already running the domain and all will be well.

When you join a domain, Win2003 asks its primary DNS server to find a domain controller for that domain and as you are running DNS on the DC and pointing to it all will be well.
