The slow down is typically caused by the additional processing of encryption/decryption of SSL. Typically SSL takes 4 times (or more) more processing than regular HTTP. I would monitor the processor on your server and see if it is above 85%. The best way to improve performance is either upgrade or add additional processors or purchase an SSL Accelerator card or appliance.
What epohl said is right. Also have a look and see what strategy do you have for SSL. What mappings? One-to-one, one-to-many. How easy is for applications to obtain CRL (certificates revocation list) if they need it.
So, if is very slow could be a configuration issue too. Gia Betiu
