Hi, I've posted this question here as I am a UNIX SA and hope that there will be many other UNIX SAs on here that will understand my problem, and forgive me for possibly posting a slightly off-topic query.

Basically, I've been searching the Web looking for a simple Excel spreadsheet or something with the appropiate formula just to keep track of disk usage on a 2Tb storage array I have. For example, someone asks me to allocate an extra 200Gb to host. I'd like to enter the 200 in the appropiate cell for the host and then see the my total remaining disk space worked out. I couldn't believe that I was unable to download a readymade one!

I'm no good with Excel, and as a UNIX SA I'd rather just download a ready made workbook, so I can concentrate on more interesting, urgent tasks!!!

Can anyone help?

cheers,

Dave.

How complicated do you want to get?

You could list the array and all the hosts in column A. Column B would be Total Space. Column C would be Available. Only the array will have a value in this column.

Row 1 is for the labels. Row 2 has the array. Cell B2 has the total space on the array (used and unused). Cell C2 has a formula: =B2-SUM(B3:B7)

The hosts are in rows 3 through 7. Cells B3 through B7 contain the amount of disk space the individual hosts are taking. When you add disks to a host, you update the Total Space cells for the host and the remainder of available disks space is automatically calculated in cell C2.

This isn't very sophisticated and I would think that the array would have software that would have more features.

Bi,

Many, many thanks for this response. I don't want to get complicated, what you have described seems like a good plan. I guess I was being a bit lazy in hoping soemone could just send me a template for me to use. But it seems that it shouldn't be too much hassle at all to knock up one myself.

FRom experience, I have discovered that arrays, like a lot SAN component technologies require additional (expensive) software if you want to do any sort of management with them.
Which you invariably do!!

thanks again,

Dave.

What flavor of Unix are you working with?
